Karaoke, can be a word that holds many weird connotations. At first, I never really tried it, and admittingly, I was a bit scared to try it since I knew I had a really bad singing voice. I didn't want to make a total fool of myself. But I am a very open minded person willing to give things a shot and in group situations, I will do what I can to fit in and try to do the socially prudent thing and join in with the groups outings. Soon, I realized it isn't so much that you are good at singing that made karaoke. It was how well you adjust to change and how well you adapt to changing events. I was amazed at how Dan and Rob were such excellent karaoke'ers. Again, not because they took any voice classes or are part of any band or know how to play any music instruments. It was because they were able to improvise and make a laugh out it. See some of the samples below to see what I mean. Now I don't fear going to karaoke. Actually, I find it to be a very educational socially. It is a definite must to help build up your social humility. Gives you a big boost to your self-confidence. Please feel free to browse around my links and songs. The music files are encoded using Lame MP3 Layer 1 at 32bits & 11Khz to keep the file sizes small. |

Ah yes, rap songs like this and Eminiem are just mindless reading off of the screen. It really shows why rappers need no singing talent. |
You Can Do Magic | America | William at my party | Ok, it isn't really horrible, but I forgot the lyrics mid-way through the song. |

This song was done really well. Anna's voice held up with all the screaming! |
Ok, a rather better attempt to hit Barry Gibb's high notes. |
This was a long ballad, but it was well done. Well, even though they were goofing around during the instrumental solos. |
This is one of my better performances. I even did that real long hold note in the middle of the song. |
Ok, I did a pretty good job shifting my voice to take account for the male and female lines. Maybe someday I can do this song in Chinese. NOT... |
This is a powerful Christmas song. Thanks to the help of Elick's great voice, we did an awesome job of the rounds on this one. |
Ok, not only does Elick have a voice for karaoke, he knows his Japanese well enough to do an uptempo version of this song as it came out a little faster than he was use to. Great adlib... |
Although, later Elick's voice gave out, he has a great singing voice. Puts mine to shame. He does a great job with that hanging note near the end of the song too! |
This song turns out to be one of the good songs that requires a good set of backup singers. We had a little bit of feedback but it was ok. |
She did a great job with this song, since the lyrics on the screen are actually out of sync to the song so she sang most of this song with her eyes closed. |

God, these guys know this song TOO well. They even got all the lyrics that didn't come up on the screen. |

This is actually my second attempt at this song. This time I tried to regulate my voice a bit better because of the high notes. I think I did ok. This is my first attempt at Angel Queen @ Victor's party. |

This is actually my second time doing this song at Mike's. This time I got it closer than my first time. Well, kind maybe..... |

A "big" person with a great vocal strength and man, does he have control even when he has to do the Spanish lyrics. |

Bowie has a nice deep voice in this song so I tried to keep it low and close to the microphone. |
Maybe it is because he is British he can do this song. This has become one of his standards. |

You know THAT note is really hard for guys to hit. Well, this is what happens when a bunch of guys tried... Plug your ears!!! |

This song is the worst all time mutilated songs that we ever brutalized. It starts off normal but trust me we went right off the deep end... |

I was just going to do this song normally because I heard the remix of it. As I was practicing the song, I just realized how perverted the song is, or rather... could be... hehehe... |

After botching up a song, I tried and do one right. |

One of the hardest songs to sing for a guy, because of that one damn note..... |

Alright, the song started ok when we started to alternate the lines that each of the different artists were suppose to sing. However, the song dragged on and on and on, and that is when we started dying.... Oh, what a horrible death.... |

Not many people has got a voice like Barry Gibb. None of us do... and you can hear how that sounds.. |

Heck, if Barry Gibb wasn't hard enough to do, Michael Jackson's voice is even harder to match. |

Ok, one of the few occasion, Victor sings. It is also an example of how one just reads rap of the screen. Just babble and mumble and ramble on. |
Ah, yes. How to mangle a love song. |

An incredibly obscure song, with video footage from Expo 86. I was very surprised that they had it. Unfortunately, my vocal range is beyond what she could sing. |

Sure it wasn't break dancing music but never the less it was catchy and in a range I could probably hit. sort of.... |

One of my favourite Japanese songs. One the best shots at a Japanese song. |
Mike's Karaoke |
Located in Metrotown, this is by far the one we most commonly go to. It has the largest selection of English music and has the best equipment. It also has a tape deck, for you to do recordings of your sessions. Japanese and Chinese selections are quite extensive too. Unfortunately, they closed up in 2002. |
Kobininya Karaoke |
Located in downtown Vancouver on Robson Street on top of a convience store, we tried this a few times. The equipment is kind of old, not very loud and very midi sounding. The selection of music is mostly Japanese but there is some English songs and actually, there are some English stuff that a lot of other places don't. What impressed me was how much 80's bands like Hall And Oates, they had. No tape recording devices supplied. You also have to order at least a drink a person for the room. |
Da Di Da Karaoke |
Located in Richmond on top of a network gaming room, this place has a rather slick computerized menu for their choices. However, this made the browsing a little hard to do at the beginning. Also Japanese songs were harder to access since they were Chinese-ized. English selection was a bit lacking, but it did have a few really obscure songs. Also no tape recording devices supplied. |
Karaoke In A Closet |
Actually this is a nickname I gave it but it describes it well. Made by a www.coinworld.co.kr, they put a karaoke machine in a closet with a recording set up. The UBC arcade and Space Rush Arcades had them. The one from Rush got moved downtown to Lion's Lair. Again, midi sounding, and the recording on the supplied machine has too much midi and not enough you singing. Mostly Korean songs with some Japanese and some English. They have some more obscure 80's bands but they have Heavy Metal bands like "Def Leppard" and Eurodisco bands like Modern Talking, Baccara and FR David. The recorder that is in the unit tends to record a high volume on the background midi and a low volume of your voice. I just used another tape recorder to record the opposite, high vocal with almost no midi. I took the two tracks and merged them together. |
Icon Karaoke |
A new venue that opened in Richmond. They had a great setup on a computer but the TV screen was 50+ inches. Also had quite of few songs that I didn't really see anywhere else, "In The Heat Of the Night" and "Spaceman Came Traveling" were some of them. |
Sing Sing Karaoke |
On Kingsway in Queens Plaza. It has changed ownership a few times, and had incidents of gang violence. But in 2003, we had tried it out again, and it has by far the best ANIME collection of songs of anyone. Make sure you ask for the "DAM" book. (pun). Other than that, there is also a rather fun scoring system which is also kinda funny. Some of the updated books does contain some songs I haven't seen elsewhere like Scorpians "Rock You Like A Hurricane" and Colin found all the Linkin Park, and Rob found his Jamariqui. Unfortunately, due to Asian gang bangers, the place closed down. |
